I was in Amsterdam for the first time and had a
night free. I wandered over to the music club
Paradiso which is one of the coolest music venues
anywhere. It's an old church with the altar as
the stage with big stained glass windows behind
it. That night there was a Gypsy band playing
and the room was swirling. Girls from all over
the world in a fever dance! I went back to my
hotel and started writing this song.

In
April of 1998 I played an "in-the-round" show
at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville with a few songwriter
friends including Jude Johnstone, an old friend
from Maine. She recorded the gig and so loved
this song that she passed it along to Don Henley,
who at the time had recorded one of her songs.
A month or so later I got a call from Don saying
he would like to record it. Several years passed
and it finally was released in June of 2000. He
did a beautiful job- true to the sprit of the
song, although I think my favorite version of
him singing it is from his VH1 Storytellers performance.
Beautifully emotional and unstudied. I had recorded
it for my album with a small string arrangement
by Larry Campbell (from Bob Dylan's band) but
we left it stripped down on the final mix.

Notes: It's hard to explain why this metaphor
popped into my head. Joe had recorded my song
"Long Drag Off A Cigarette" and I played guitar
on the session, (on his "Civilized Man" album).
I guess I felt a connection to him, and just after
that I saw him live. His fans were wild for him,
but I couldn't help but wonder how much of it
was a certain perverse thrill in wondering whether
or not he would make it through the show. I first
sang the song in Austin, Texas, and everyone laughed
when I first sang the line, "Can Joe Cocker hit
the high notes tonight." By the end of the song
they seemed to get that it wasn't meant to be
a joke sort of song.

I was one of the contenders for the Lowell George

together.Leni Stern was the first to release it
on her CD titled "Black Guitar." I was playing

I
had the initial music and lyric phrase to this
song in my head for a long time. Then one time
on a visit to Nashville, the maid at my hotel
left on a Black gospel station after cleaning
the room. After that I spent every day glued to
the morning show hosted by a Dr. Babs called "
It's Gospel Time!" Lincoln Schleifer, my bass
player and the producer of "Dandelion Soul" had
worked with The Blind Boys of Alabama in a Broadway
show called The Gospel at Colonus. One sunday
they showed up in the Bronx where we were recording,
and sang on this track. Definitely a high point
in my musical life.

3rd song in a trilogy that began with "Chinatown"
on my Atlantic album and continued with "Chinatown
Revisited" on "Vibrolux." Sort of like The Godfather
I, II, & III!

I
lived in Baton Rouge years ago and shared a house
with a friend whose two brothers often passed
through. One of them, Richie, was a self destructive
wild seed, whose destruction finally came to fruition.
We'll never know if it was by his own hand or
that of the police, but that's a long story. Anyway,
there was a mongrel dog on our street who hung
out at our house and who, in his rough and tumble
nature, reminded me of Richie. Not to be morose,
but one day I saw him (the dog) get hit by a car
and it was one of those firsts in my life--the
first time that I realized that all living things
really want to live--even the most wayward and
self destructive souls.

Perhaps you already know that Gypsy Cabs are the guys who drive around New York
picking up taxi passengers without an official taxi or license. The registered taxi drivers
aren't too happy about this as a taxi license in New York costs a couple of hundred thousand,
or something like that. They are bought like a home mortgage and paid for by hours of blood,
sweat, tears and sometimes knives and bullets! Still a man's got to make a living...This is an
out-take from the Vibrolux sessions with Jerry Scheff on bass and Don Heffington on drums.
I had recorded a cool version of this for a Geffen Records demo that I may release on a future
"Loose Ends Volume Two" CD.

This is the first song that I wrote on the Dobro. The Dobro is my new love though I'm not sure yet if it loves me. I like to play it in standard tuning so that it is easy to play in any key at any time but it leaves the bass notes a bit to the imagination. Maybe I'm missing the point. Kelly Jo Phelps sure does a nice thing with tunings. My friend Jesse Harris, who is now well known as the Norah Jones songwriter, wrote a beautiful song called "Amateur" on the "Once Blue" CD he did with Rebecca Martin. I looked up the origin of the word. It has the same roots as "Amore" so it loosely means "one who loves a thing." In that case what is a "Professional"- one who is burnt out on something! Ah, well, my mind began to wander, as it often does.

and played guitar on this track. My friend Peter Gallway was the executive producer. In a funny small way,
this recording is for me the "peak moment" of my "career." Living in New York, playing guitar in the
Cornell Dupree style that has so inspired me, recording one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite
artists, with a dear friend and soulful talented bandmates. I love this record.

I produced this track, played Dobro, and sang back-up vocals on it. I think it's a beautiful record. It's heavy on the
Christian content. All I'll say about that is that if you're going through anything (like life), I believe Black Gospel
music can help you through it.
